About Us – The Crazy Ladies of PA
So this is the story of the Barrett Scarecrow 5K Race and how the Crazy Ladies of PA became the Crazy Ladies of PA, where it began to where we are today. In 2001 Jean Williams, Rhonda Vickers and Kari Spannagel all registered for the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer 3-Day. A 60 mile walk over three days to raise money and awareness for Breast Cancer. Simultaneously Jean was organizing the Barrett Scarecrow 5K Race and Children’s Fun Run in Barrett Township. The race started as a Safety Day Celebration and benefitted youth in Barrett Township. Over the years the race evolved benefitting various charities including the Susan Komen Breast Cancer 3-Day, the Diabetes Foundation, the Wegner’s Granulomatosis Foundation and most recently Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation for Childhood Cancer. The charity varied depending on where the race organizers felt the need was the greatest.
Over the years the race has raised over $24,500 for various charities. JA Reinhardt, Weiler Corporation and Palmisano Containers have been race sponsors from the beginning while Cove Haven Entertainment Resorts and Kalahari Resorts have joined more recently, we are grateful for all of our race sponsors. Included in race participation are goodie bags, long sleeve tech shirts and age group winners receive medals, all of which are very cool, I must say. In order to donate to the many worthy charities we rely on sponsors to help defray the cost of the shirts, medals, postage, insurance and other race expenses. See our sponsorship section on the web page if you are interested in being a race sponsor.
The race includes a 5K and a Children’s Fun Run, beginning and ending on the grounds of Weiler Corporation in Cresco, PA. The course is an out and back with an infamous hill and a legendary troll to help you finish the race. The Barrett Scarecrow Race has become a staple in Barrett Township each fall and a great family event that participants look forward to year after year. So what about the Crazy Ladies? Well the Crazy Ladies of PA are self-proclaimed by doing 10 plus 3-Day walks across the US beginning in 2001 through today. We all felt you must be crazy to continue to do an event such as the 3-Day. We made long lasting friendships stemming from the 3-Day and quickly realized that it was more about the journey and we continued to walk because we each knew we could not just walk away.
In November 2016 the Crazy Ladies of PA will once again be walking the 3-Day as only the Crazy Ladies of PA can.
